The
Kennels Main Buildings
These include: Large Kennel Block, Small Kennel Block, Reception, Staff
Room, Feed Preparation Room and Grooming Parlour. Although these are
old our dedicated staff spare no effort to maintain them in a clean
and hygienic manner. All boarders have a ‘room with a view’
depending on whether they prefer to be by the main activity area or
overlooking the quieter woods or house
paddock.
During the quieter times all dogs are housed in the main kennel block.
When it is busier the small dogs are housed in the Small Kennel Block
so that their owners do not have to worry about their pet having overly
large or exuberant neighbours!
Kennels
Exercise Main Paddock
Boarding dogs are continuously freely exercised in this area.
House Exercise Paddock
Specialist one-to-one private dog training advice & tuition is conducted
in this area.
Isolation Kennel & Wetland Habitat
The Isolation Kennel is used in the event that a boarding dog develops
a contagious ailment such as Kennel Cough. It is imperative that a sick
dog can be isolated to prevent the spread of disease.
House, Stables/Storage Buildings & Oakwood Parkland
Oakwood Park Kennels is licensed to take 100 dogs. It is a condition
of the licence that the premises are manned 24 hours a day for animal
husbandry needs. The parkland is used for working and patrol dog training.
Oakwood
Park Kennels is a permitted development within the area known as Big
Wood. Oakwood Park is rich and diverse with regard to the ecology of
the various zones maintained as a functional requirement of the kennels
activities and the sensitive management of the owners, which stems from
their scientific background and appreciation of nature.
The kennels business at Oakwood Park has passed through the hands of
several private owners and now resides with Mr.& Mrs.Carpenter and
is their sole occupation. Both Mr.& Mrs.Carpenter were formerly
employed as scientists at Jealotts Hill Research Station. Mr.Carpenter
is well known world-wide in the specialist field of Chromatography.
Mrs.Carpenter is a Founder Member of the Australian Cattle Dog Society
of Great Britain and was Hon.Secretary for seventeen years, she is still
an active Committee Member.
She has successfully competed in Breed Shows (including Crufts) and
Working Trials, judging occasionally. She was dog handler and photographic
assistant on the production of a major series of dog breed handbooks
and encyclopaedia, as well as being co-author (in conjunction with Sally
Bergh-Roose who also co-runs the Training Classes) of a book on dog
training and the responsibilities of dog ownership.
Oakwood Park business is growing under the management of Mr.& Mrs.Carpenter
and although Boarding Dogs is still the prime function, now includes
a steadily developing Dog Grooming business.
Acorn Dog Training Centre
runs regular twelve week Basic Obedience
courses as well as Puppy Playgroup and Private Tuition as required.
Acorn also runs Agility classes which are
growing in popularity all the time, and Working
Trials training, particularly aimed at beginners. In conjunction
with the training courses, Oakwood Park is now registered with The Kennel
Club to run their Kennel Club Good Citizen Tests.
